Au Pair's Message to Families
I am Ione, from Brazil, I am half Japanese, half Brazilian. I grew up in a multicultural environment until my parents' divorce, and somehow I always like to get to know new cultures and places. But I do not like being a tourist, I like being a traveler, to get to know from the inside to the outside, not the other way around. I have been in touch with kids forever. When I younger, I used to help my Karate coach with some pupils, however it was not in regular basis. It was only when he needed help, which could be 5 times a week for 2 hours, when he was away, to weeks with no need to help. In 2005 I took a year gap from Uni - I studied International Relations - to live in the U.S. as an au pair. What first was only a year gap turned into 2 years of au pairing in U.S.. I lived in Naples, Florida, and Boston, Massachusetts. After these 2 years working as an au pair I came to Sweden to visit my sister, and I ended up staying and au pairing for one more year. After my au pair year came the opportunity to study in Sweden, so I stayed, and I have been here in Sweden for almost 3 years now, and from the first month living in Sweden up to now, I have been working with kids.
I am currently working for an amazing Swedish family, which I have been with since summer 2009. I took care of 2 girls, 4 and 6 years old. We have an amazing connection, and truth to be told, time has improved our relationship, however it is time to take a step further and move on. I love them with all my heart but I miss the thrill of discovering new countries, meeting new people, learning about the world. I have learned a lot working as an au pair and I really appreciate joyful, happy and warm families. As au pair I learned that there are families who will not let you make the difference, who will put barriers to let you in in their lives even though you all live under the same roof. I am looking for a family beyond that. The perfect family for me must give me the feeling of happiness, equilibrium. I want to build a relationships, real bonds with the family, not a professional one. This is quite important to me. As I previously said I have learned a lot being au pair, and as a closure for my au pair adventure, I really expect a great time, and if you're family can offer me that I am all yours! :)
A bit more about me... In Sweden I have studied Linguistics in English, and I have also taken Political Science and Creative Writing (Writing is one of my favorite activities!). Linguistics is a very pleasant course, and as part of my job withthe kids, I teach them English, and the experience has been amazing, however I just realized that linguistics is not what I want to do for the rest of my life. As for Political Science, it's quite interesting, however I still don't have that sparkle for the profession.
About my courses and au pairing, my plans are to take distance courses and move abroad . I am pretty much used to work and study at the same time. I currently work 35-ish hours/week, and deal with both work and studying has been good so far. Of course I understand my commitment with my work, and when it is necessary I prioritize it.
About visa and bureaucratic procedures, I already have a residence permit to Sweden, the families should know that visa and everything around it are not really a big issue in my case. I understand that if the family expects me to work on that I will respect your wish.
About driving... I have driving license, and experience driving in big cities. The family I am currently working for offers me a car for my own use and I drive for the kids and myself around Stockholm. The same happened when I lived in Boston, when my job was basic drive the kids around.
About salary... I am well paid in Sweden, but as I said before I am more concerned about having a good time than with money. I don't expect to make money as an au pair, but I expect good sense. Some families really pay less than average, less than the Au Pair deserves and I believe a good family knows the balance between what they can afford and what the au pair deserves.
...I tried to give you a general idea of who I am and my experience, however there's always something else uncovered. If you have any question, or want to know more about me, please don't hesitate...just ask! :)
