Nanny's Message to Families

Dear family,

My name is Virginia and I am twenty four years old. I was born in Entre Ríos, a lovely province in the North-East of Argentina, but I live with my family in Córdoba, a city located in the centre of my country. It is a big city, the second in order of importance. It is famous for its hills, its rich historical background and its University, which is the third most prestigious in Latin America and where I am a sophomore at the School of Languages. I have been living in Larchmont, New York as an au pair for 7 months now and I am in love with this place, its culture and the people. My biggest wish right now, as my year is comming to an end, is to continue living this wonderful experience. I am pleased to write to you as I consider the fact of letting me become a member of your family an immense act of greatness and love. It means a lot for me because I find gathered two of my greatest passions and those are English and children care. During all my life I have been studying your culture. I have started learning your language along with mine from the age of five, and at the moment I am studying to become an English translator. I am also the eldest of four brothers, Santiago (22), Francisco (18) and Lucrecia (15); therefore I am used to looking after children. I have been a guide and tutor for them since I was twelve, while my mother, a public employee, and my father, a military work. I woke my brothers up in the morning, prepared lunch, took them to school, help them do their homework, or other things like taking them to the doctor, for instance. I never complained about it but on the contrary, I felt proud, it gave me confidence and I enjoyed it very much. That is why when my aunt asks me to take care of my four cousins while she is out attending a course or whenever she has a party, I do it joyfully and enthusiastically. The first time I took care of my cousins I was eighteen and Julio was 10, José, 9, Juan, 6 and Jernónimo, 2. We used to have wonderful times together! We used to organize games and plays (they loved them), watch movies, and I even taught Julio how to play the guitar, my biggest hobby apart from drawing, reading, singing and listening to music. But besides having fun, we always were aware of the time to do the homework. Then I cooked for them and after that, time to go to bed! That was a very nice moment... I love to watch children when they are asleep; they look so tender and peaceful! I also take care of my friend’s little baby, Juan Ignacio (5 months) while she is at work. This is a wonderful experience, because she is the first friend of mine who is a mother, so Nacho is a very special baby for me. We are happy together because I have been near him since he was born, so it is not difficult to understand what he needs every time he cries for attention. We have a lot of fun especially at bath time! It is an adventure, a game for both of us. He loves playing with his rubber toys in the water and it is beautiful for me to watch him laugh, it gives me a unique kind of energy so hard to compare with other experiences. In conclusion, I think that to have the chance of continuing working as an au pair in an American family would be the best way to enjoy both my passions. I would be extremely happy if this dream comes true, as I am looking forward to living this wonderful experience sharing good times and learning within a nice family environment, because I consider the family the most important and pure institution.
