Au Pair's Message to Families
Dear Host Family,
My name is Fenny. I live in the Netherlands. I grew up in a small town called Vianen but I was born in Utrecht, the nearest big city (a 40-minute drive from Amsterdam).
I am the babysitter of four families. One of those families are my aunt and uncle and theire two daughters one of 9 and one of 5 years old. They are real girly girls, so when I am there they always ask if there are nice boys in my class. Beside girltalk we also play with dolls, boardgames, do each other’s hair and bake cookies. The second family also has two girls, one of 9 and one of 5 years old. Their mother, teaches horsebackriding. She used to teach me and my sisters. Her girls are big horsefans. I often help them with their homework because I think school is very important, but when it is done we have a lot of fun. We go cycling, watch movies, talk about horses and many more things. The third Family has two boys, very different but also a lot of fun. When I pick them up from school I first give them something to drink and some fruit, then we go to the playground to play soccer, or we do puzzles, make drawings and more (after the homework is done off course) The boys are brothers but very different. One is very shy but the other loves attention. If there are problems I try to make compromises and keep a balance between these two very different boys and it works well.
I have a wide range of interests, I will tell something about them. One of my biggest hobbies is traveling. I take every chance I get to go somewhere. This year alone I went to Paris, Berlin, Rome and Istanbul. Other hobbies of mine are handicrafts, cycling and animals. I always have to be busy with my hands, so I make postcards, keychains and more. At the moment I am learning how to knit. I love cycling. It gives you fresh air, a good view and it is enviromentally friendly. I always go to school by bike (45 minutes) and I love those pauses in the day, I always listen to all kinds of music while I cycle and that helps me relax too. When I was younger (10 till 13 years old) I worked as a volunteer in an animalshelter nearby. I have never lived without having a pet, but there comes a lot of cleaning with it because of my asthma and allergies so I am OK with it to live a year without pets in the house. I like reading too, books like CSI (also my favourite tv-show), Harry Potter, magazines, et cetera. I also love to write. I am a member of the schoolnewspaper. I am the one who plans the schedule and keeps everyone to their word. I am a very organised persoon, but always keep some room for spontaneity and the unexpected. Trying new things is also a hobby of mine. So don’t be suprised when I have added some new hobbies later on.
As long as I remember I have been interested in the American way of life, and then I don’t mean being an actress and making a lot of money. (However, that last part doesn’t hurt, hihi) I mean celibrating holidays like thanksgiving, finding out the differences between big city and suburb life, finding out how it feels to be part of a country 232 times bigger than where I live now and a lot more. I want to experience the American way of life first hand so my cultural understanding of the country that fascinates me so much becomes bigger and more reliable than it is now. I have looked for a very long time for the best way to do this and when I found the Au Pair Programme of Travelactive (the dutch partner of the organisation Interexchange, when I do find a suited family on the web I do want them to be a member of this organisation) I just knew; this is it! Not only can I experience the American way of life within a real American family who is open to my own culture but I can also take care of their kids, something I love to do. After some more research (I like to be prepared) I found out that an Au Pair has the opportunity to travel and make a lot of new friends who not only come from the US but from all over the world. This made me even more enthusiastic than I already was.
I do search for a view qualities in my hostfamily. You may have seen my citypreferences earlier. I like this cities so much because they are close to the sea. I like to take long walks by the sea. It helps me relax. So everybody who likes me and lives nearby the east- or westcoast should have no doubts about contacting me. I do want to let you know that right now I am 17 and I don’t have my driverslicence yet. But before I will leave too the USA (juli 2009-August 2009) I will have completed all the all the required necessities. (for more information, contact Interexchange)
I think by becoming an Au Pair a whole new world will open up to me and I am planning to enjoy every second of it. At the end I hope I will have gained a lot of new friends, unforgettable experiences, a high level of independence and wisdom that I probably can’t imagine right now. So bring it on!
Yours faithfully, Fenny (Poppins).
