Au Pair or Nanny job description
Your responsibilities will include caring for our 3 young children. This includes all aspects of childcare: playing, singing, dancing, going out to the playgrounds, museums, etc., meal preparation (some basic cooking skills are required), putting them to bed, reading, bathing, and laundry. Although you will have plenty of opportunities to speak English we would be very grateful if you would speak German to the children.
Hours will mostly be during the week Monday to Friday with occasional evening or weekend hours. This will leave most evenings and weekends free for you to hang out with friends, travel or take classes. We will always let you know your schedule in advance so you can make plans. We have a housekeeper who cleans our home on a weekly basis so you will never have to scrub a toilet or anything like that! However, we do expect you to take responsibility for tidying up after the little guys at the end of the day.
Family's Message to Au Pair or Nanny
Dear Au Pair,
We are looking for a wonderful, loving and experienced au pair to join our family of five (plus one cat) in beautiful northern California next summer (August 2009). You will be our 4th au pair and we are looking forward to welcoming you to our home.
We have two sons (Nicolai was born in November 2005 and Mathis was born in March 2007) and one daughter (Annick was born born in June 2008). They are happy, energetic and affectionate and have enjoyed having a "big sister" care for them during the day. Nicolai and Mathis speak both German and English (thanks in large part to our au pairs) and we hope the same for Annick one day (of course she still only goo's and gaa's). We might be a little biased, but if you become our au pair you will be caring for the cutest kids around!
I am an anesthesiologist. I currently work 4 days a week but will soon be scaling back to 3 days a week. My husband is German and moved to the U.S. when he was 27 years old. He is a lawyer. His parents still live in Germany, near Koblenz, and it is for this reason that we really want our children to speak German fluently, so they can have a meaningful relationship with their grandparents. Our three previous au pairs have also appreciated having someone from Europe in our household. We better understand when you feel homesick and can bring a little of Europe into our home (like special foods or holidays) to help make it easier for you to transition to your American life here.
You will definitely be part of our family but will have all the freedom you desire to make friends, to travel around the U.S. and to pursue new hobbies. We are a family with Au Pair in America and have had a very good experience with them and would recommend that you come to us through their program.
We live in the Bay Area just south of San Francisco (about 45 minutes by train). You will have access to a car so that on the weekends you can travel to Lake Tahoe for skiing/snowboarding and to all the wonderful beaches along the coast (Big Sur, Half Moon Bay...). We're also close to Napa Valley. The nearby town of Palo Alto is a very cute university town with cafes, bookstores, and of course, a big American mall. The weather is mild all year round so you can almost always go outside. There's lots of hiking and horseback riding trails, swimming pools and tennis courts around too. This would be a perfect place for an au pair who likes sports. There are a lot of German companies in the area, and as a result, there are lots of Germans. If at first you are feeling shy getting to know your American peers, you will have no problem finding lots of young Germans to hang out with.
We are looking for an au pair who truly loves the company of children and will find pleasure in all the little joys that present themselves when working with 3 small children. If you become our au pair, you will help Annick learn to speak, you will be with us when Mathis attends preschool for the first time, and you will watch Nicolai develop his first real friendships. Caring for 3 young children takes a lot of energy and patience, and these are qualities that are important to us in our au pair. Since the boys will be attending preschool in the mornings, we need an au pair who feels comfortable driving them to and from school. The ability to swim is also important since there is a pool in our neighborhood and the kids will be taking swimming lessons throughout the year.
We believe in working hard to make our au pair happy (we work with you to find agreeable vacation and holiday time, we provide a cell for you, free long distance calls to Germany and wireless internet service for your computer, access to fitness facilities, etc.) but in return look for an au pair who will put her heart and hard work into caring for our children. If you think you might be the right au pair for us, please contact us!
We look forward to hearing from you!
